The past 12 months in 'Soapland' has been full of drama, not only that we have seen the 50th anniversary of Coronation Street and the 25th anniversary of Eastenders.
It has been a year of classic characters making their return, legendary characters saying their goodbyes and dark issues being explored.
From swapping babies to fires. From the deaths of famous characters to a tram crash. From explosions to characters struggling with paralysis. From gangsters to kidnap. 'Soapland' has been full of drama over the last year. Meaning the fight to win at The British Soap Awards has been even more difficult this year.
On Saturday 16, 2011, the cast and crew of 'Eastenders', 'Coronation Street'. 'Emmerdale', 'Hollyoaks' and 'Doctors' travelled to Granada Studios in Manchester where the winners of the 18 awards were announced.
'Coronation Street' were the big winners of the evening, collecting an amazing nine awards. Bill Tarmey, who played Jack Duckworth, won both Best Exit as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award, which was presented to him by his onscreen wife Elizabeth Dawn. When collecting his award he said: "I still miss Jack. I'm still getting used to it, but I don't regret quitting." Corrie also won Best Dramatic Performance which went to Jane Danson, who plays Leanne Barlow, for her performance during the live episode, and Best Comedy Performance which was won by Patti Clare, who plays the comical Mary Taylor. Other awards they won included Best Young Actor to Alexander Bain, who plays Simon Barlow, Best Storyline for the 'End of the line for the Websters and Dobbs' and Most Spectacular Scene for the Tram Crash. Michelle Keegen, who plays Tina McIntyre, won Sexiest Female for the third year in a row. However, Corrie's biggest triumph was their award for Best Single Episode for their 50th anniversary Live Episode.
'Eastenders', on the other hand won only four awards, however it could be argued that a number of them were the more high profile titles. Their biggest accomplishment was once again being named The Best Soap. As well as this, Jessie Wallace had a successful evening, winning Best Actress for her role as Kat Moon and also winning Best Onscreen Partnership, alongside Shane Richie, who plays her onscreen husband. The final award won by the London-based soap was Sexiest Male which was won for the third time in a row by Scott Maslen, who plays Jack Branning.
Although 'Emmerdale's' evening could be viewed as less successful than expected, the two awards they did receive both had sentimental value to the cast and crew of the soap. Danny Miller, who plays Aaron Livesy, won the award for Best Actor, after blowing fans away with countless dramatic, emotion filled performances over the past two years. The Special Achievement award went to the late Emmerdale producer who lost his battle with Cancer in November 2010 at the young age of 41, only weeks after being diagnosed.
'Hollyoaks' also seemed to have a substantially successful evening, considering their unsuccessful history at the awards. They left with two awards, both presented to Emmett J.Scanlan, who plays bad boy Brendan Brady. He walked away with Best Newcomer and Villain of the Year.
Unusually, daytime soap 'Doctors' left without a single award to it's name. In previous years, it often surprises viewers by grabbing numerous titles.
Overall, with what could be argued as the biggest year yet for both 'Eastenders' and 'Coronation Street' seemed to pay off on the night. With both 'Hollyoaks' and 'Emmerdale' having their say too.
